EFT (Tapping) - Often Works When Nothing Else Will !

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) effectively forms the bridge between talk therapies and body therapies. It works on the understanding that our thoughts about ourselves and our experiences and circumstances can disrupt the energy system in our bodies and that this disruption can cause negative reactions. Rebalance our response, and the feelings change, often dramatically.

It uses tapping on key points on the body's meridians while thinking of a specific issue, emotion or memory. It is often described as "emotional acupuncture without needles". Typically, the memory will remain but all the negative emotional charge that was associated with it evaporates. Note, it is the symptoms that cause the problem, not the event or situation. Once this has been done, it becomes difficult to access the old emotions again, even when someone tries really hard. It leads to clear thinking, enabling a fresh perspective and forward movement.

Shifting energy changes the way our brains process information about a particular issue. So tapping while tuned in to the issue is like rewiring or re-routing the brain's conditioned negative response. It changes both feelings and thinking.

Part of EFT's appeal is that anyone can learn it and use it for themselves. It is simple and easy to learn and to use to release negative feelings whether they are emotional or physical, and whether they refer to the past, the present or the future. Yet its simplicity is, in a sense, deceptive. For it lends itself both to this simple, effective self-help and to sophisticated depth work on complex issues with a skilled and experienced therapist.

EFT is based on the original work of clinical psychologist Dr.Roger J.Callahan's study of Meridian Therapies and his development of Thought Field Therapy (TFT) - itself based on Acupressure Points and Applied Kinesiology combined with some simple Psychotherapy techniques. This system is somewhat complicated and was simplified by one of Callahan's students, Stanford engineer Gary Craig, who developed Emotional Freedom Techniques.
